Software Description

Sound Studio is a shareware application that allows you to record and edit AIFF sound files on your Mac. It is disk-based, multithreaded, and capable of recording while running in the background. It has a visual waveform editor for precise cut-and-paste editing, and several filters for modifying the audio.

This program also features audio fades, amplification, a Crop command, and more. Normalize and Amplify filters work on eight-bit audio. Sound Studio even supports Sound Designer II files, single-channel editing, and sound-input source controls. It also features effects such as Chorus, Flanger, Reverb, Compressor, and Expander; a 3-, 10-, and 30-band graphic EQ; and a sound recording and playback engine.

- Digitize vinyl records and cassette tapes, turn them into MP3s or CDs

- Create DJ mixes by combining multiple tracks, and match beats with pitch and tempo shifting

- Clean up audio samples with EQ, fade envelope, dynamics compression, and other effects

- Record your own podcast and interviews, edit out the mistakes, uhs, and umms, and encode in MP3 or AAC for your podcast feed

- Natively edit in 32-bit floating-point for high precision with no need to worry about clipping or noise floors

- Handles any sample rate: playback and recording limited only to hardware capabilities

- Use your Mac’s built-in audio hardware, or connect to any Core-Audio-based audio device including USB microphones and converter boxes

- Layer sounds with multiple tracks: unlimited number of tracks, record to one or two tracks, and mixdown all tracks to stereo or mono

- Low latency audio

- Timer recording

- Automatic starting and stopping of recording based on audio volume level thresholds

- Smooth zooming in and out of the audio waveform

- Zoom in all the way in to individual sample level and make edits with sample-accuracy

- Ruler units for film (24 fps and feet-frames) and television (25/30 fps)

- Marker system for placing cue points or chapter markers

- Save each chapter as a separate file or track for importing into iTunes

- Grid system for aligning edits to whole packet sizes, BPM, or other units

- Supports 2-axis mouse scroll ball/wheel for zooming and scrolling

- Supports several ProTools-style keyboard shortcuts

- Tone and noise generators for creating sounds from scratch

- Analyze frequency content using the Fourier Transform

- Use both Apple-supplied and 3rd party Audio Unit effects

- AUMatrixReverb: full control over sound reflections, with several presets

- AUDynamicsProcessor: multi-paramter control over dynamics, including compression and expansion

- AUMultibandCompressor: dynamics control on different frequency bands

- Many other Apple-supplied plug-ins available

- Supports custom Carbon or Cocoa UIs for all Audio Unit plug-ins.

- Extend Sound Studio with commercial 3rd-party plug-ins and free downloadable ones
