Software Description
The most important part of any drawing application is arguably the drawing area, so we've just made Sketch contain one big and infinitely large view with no palettes to be seen. That doesn't mean we've compromised on the tools though.
Sketch is a true vector editing application and has many powerful tools to manipulate those vectors. Sketch has boolean operations that fully preserve your carefully constructed vectors down the individual curves.
Key features:
- Documents in Sketch have infinite size, and that gives you ultimate freedom. The Hand tool is the main navigational tool and you will be using the spacebar often to navigate around.
- Slices in Sketch are incredibly powerful and versatile. For one, they can overlap each other. Two, you can quickly export individual slices with one click.
- If an infinite workspace isn’t enough; you can have more than one of them. Having multiple pages inside a single document will really start to make a difference as your project grows.
- A symbol is in effect a separate page in your document, and you can have as instances of this page all rendering exactly what’s on the page. The benefit? Change the page, and all the instances change too.
- Even in an infinite workspace, Sketch has powerful rulers, grids and automatic and manual guides to get that perfect positioning. Sketch also automatically compares sizes and measures distances between layers.
- The vector tool is the central part of Sketch. The vector tool itself is incredibly versatile and joins an excellent brush and pen tool.
- Libraries in Sketch are the perfect way to build up a collection of reusable objects. We provide a few on our website but you can make your own in a minute.
- Instead of drawing everything from scratch, use our predefined standard shapes that will most likely cover all your needs. We have rectangles, ovals, stars and much more.
- Text is rendered beautifully in Sketch. That'll come in handy we’re sure. Sketch also supports Text on a path and styles for sharing styles across layers. Besides that there’s kerning and leading and more.
- Sometimes vectors only get you so far and Sketch deals with images well. You'll also be happy to know that any shape can be turned into a mask for images as well.
- Groups are in Sketch not only as a mere organisational tool but act as layers too. You can even turn a group into a dynamic vector that’ll do a non-destructive boolean operation on its contents.
- Why did we even think move forward/backward functions were sufficient? Don't we usually explicitly want to move a layer under (or on top of) another layer? In Sketch, you can with a single click.
- Speaking about boolean operations, Sketch has the best. Fully preserving the curves of your carefully constructed shapes, they get even more better when turning a group into a dynamic shape.
- No vector editor would be completely without Join and Split commands. Sketch's join command is incredibly smart and will always connect to closest points of multiple vectors automatically.
- Decorations are a nice way to transform simple curves into stunning objects. A decoration can be an arrowhead on the end of line or more complex shape like flower or leaf. Of course you can make your own.
- Sketch’s transform works as you would expect with the nice addition of being able to transform multiple layers at the same time.
- As the name suggests, the scissors tool cuts line segments out of a vector shape thus creating multiple subpaths.
- Smart Rotate in Sketch will rotate multiple copies the original shape around a certain point. If you've ever had to create the petals of a flower you’ll recognise how useful this is.
- Turn simple vectors into fluid brush strokes or go even further by creating completely new shapes from them. You have ultimate control over this completely non-destructive process.
- Sketch’s patch tool is an easy way to tweak part of your vector by simply drawing part of it again. You'll be able to endlessly refine your shapes to get them just perfect.
- Blob and eraser are two other ways to fine-tune your vectors but these two work like the brush and eraser you know from bitmap editors while still producing complete vector layer.
- For more artistic tweaks on your vectors you'll be using our distortion tools. We offer the full range of tools, anything distortion you could possibly want will be possible with these tools.
- The different mirror options are perfect for the creating mirrored shapes; where the left is equal to the right or the bottom equal to the top.
