Software Description
PerformanceTest enables anyone to objectively benchmark their computer by putting it through six test suites comprising of twenty-eight unique tests, each carefully designed to cover all aspects of computing performance. It can help you assess if your computer is performing at its peak, whether it's time to upgrade or to measure the performance of different machine components.
In a single mouse-click, you can obtain the PassMark Rating, an overall score for your machine's unique configuration for use in comparison with other machines. PerformanceTest comes with a number of built-in baselines for machine comparison.
With an internet connection, you can also search through comparison baselines supplied by one of the world's largest component baseline repositories at PassMark Web site. These baselines can be freely downloaded, saved and compared with your machine from the PerformanceTest interface.
Key features:
- Comprehensive online help
- Supports hyper-threading, and multiple CPUs testing
- Detailed disk speed graphs
- Supports printing results
- The ability to save your benchmark results to disk as a new baseline
- A customizable "Notes" field for storing your own information along with the saved Benchmark result.
- Support for copying the results to other applications (eg. MS-Word)
- Export results to HTML, text, GIF, and BMP formats
- Single test execution, execution of a test suite or execution of all tests with a single mouse click.
- A summary 'Mark' figure for each test suite plus the calculation of the PassMark Rating figure.
- An easy to use point and click interface
- A summary system information screen including CPU type, CPU speed, Total RAM, Video Hardware, Cluster size, etc..
- The ability to compare the performance of your computer to multiple 'Baseline' computers at the one time.
- Flexible license, move the software
This Advanced Disk Test, which is part of PerformanceTest, measures the data transfer speed when reading or writing data to one or more disks. The speed that data can be transferred between memory and a hard disk drive is one of a system's most important performance aspects. There are quite a few factors which have a bearing on this speed and the Advanced Disk Drive Test allows the user to vary most of these factors and compare the results.
The test supports any drive that can be mounted under Windows. Including IDE drives, SCSI, RAID, USB key drives, SATA, networked shared drives and external drives.
Users have the ability to test multiple drives at the same time using multiple threads, and specify:
- The size of the test file used. Larger files mean that the system cache has less of an effect on the test types, which use caching (see below).
- The size of the data block used for each read or write request. Larger blocks mean less requests and can lead to an improvement in performance.
- The choice of four access methods - C/C++ API, Win32 API cached / uncached and raw disk access.
- Sequential or random access (seeking plus reading and writing)
- Synchronous and Asynchronous access
- The split between reading and writing
The results of all completed tests may be graphed using our custom graphing components.
This test (part of PerformanceTest), allows the data read speed from a CD or DVD drive to be measured. Measuring the write speed to CD-Rs and CD-RWs is also available on Windows 2000, XP and 2003 Server. Vista and Windows 7 use a different write method that is not yet supported as of PT 7.0.
The rate at which a CD Drive can read data from a CD ROM varies about many factors. Firstly, and most importantly, is the speed of the manufactured drive. Older drives list speeds of 2X or 4X, (1X = 0.1536 MB/Sec), whereas top end drives at time of writing are now advertised as having speeds of 48X and 56X.
CD benchmark parameter entry windowAnother large influence on the data transfer rate from CD/DVD is the system cache and the part it plays in storing frequently accessed data. The cache is a section of memory Windows uses to store data for fast access. The first time, for instance, a 10 MB file is read from a CD / DVD ROM, it is likely that Windows will copy it to the cache, recognizing that the data may soon be requested again. Upon subsequent requests for the same file, Windows will simply read the file directly from the cache and hence bypass the bottleneck of reading from the CD/DVD ROM again. If the data hasn't been used, after a certain period of time and/or a certain number of I/O requests, it will be replaced in the cache with more recent or essential data. Requesting the file at this stage, will mean Windows must go directly to the CD/DVD ROM once more. Obviously, whether the file data on the CD/DVD ROM is cached or not, has a large impact on tests which use the cache.
The Advanced CD/DVD test allows users to change the following test parameters.
- The size of the data block used for each read request. Larger blocks mean less requests and can lead to an improvement in performance (CD-ROM test)
- The choice of four access methods - CLIB, WIN32 API cached/uncached and raw disk access (CD-ROM test).
- The duration to carry out the test for.
The results of all completed CD ROM, CD-R and CD-RW speed tests may be graphed using our colourful custom graphing components.
3D Graphics technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years and this test measures how fast 3D images can be created and displayed.
Microsoft provides a set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) called DirectX, which allow developers to create games and other high-performance multimedia applications. DirectX provides support for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) graphics, sound effects, music, input devices, and networked applications such as multiplayer games.
The Advanced 3D Graphics Test has been designed to benchmark the how well your video card performs when using the most common features of DirectX. It renders a number of scenes to the screen in windowed or full screen mode. As such, PerformanceTest requires DirectX version 9 or above. With an extra DirectX 10 test being available if you have Vista and a DirectX10 compatible video card.
Apart from individual graphics card speeds and abilities, the test illustrates a single video card's drop in performance as the rendered scene becomes more complex. A scene with more objects, more textures and more DirectX features implemented may well look more impressive, but will more than likely result in a reduction in frame rate
Many of the rendering options for the scene can be selected by the user.
- A "Bouncing balls test" or a 'game like' "Terrain and water test".
- Whether Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader effects are applied to the "Terrain and water test" (only available on newer graphics cards).
- The number of objects displayed in the test.
- Whether the scene is lighted or not and the option to choose specular lighting (Specular lighting gives the objects an appearance of being 'shiny').
- Whether random alpha blending is used to give some objects a sense of transparency.
- The choice of a wireframe mode.
- Control over how the objects are moved - Rotation, and/or movement in each direction (X, Y and Z).
- The screen mode and resolution.
- No texturing, a single texture or multi-textured to be applied on objects.
- The duration to carry out the test for.
