Software Description

Track times are the activities like basketball or creative painting that campers participate during each week of camp.

Every camper participates in two track times (they occur one after the other and are referred to as track A and track B for the remainder of this document, some tracks only run for one of the two) which they are assigned to based on the preferences campers provide on registration day.

It is the job of camp staff to try and assign each camper to the tracks they want the most while respecting the enrollment constraints placed on each track by available resources and staff.

PIT Toolkit key features:

- It reduces the number of staff available to perform other registration duties like managing traffic, greeting campers, answering questions and all of the other things that sometimes need to get done at camp (like driving to Wal-Mart to buy out their inventory of air mattresses).

- The availability of track times had to be mostly set prior to the start of registration day. Sometimes, the staffers doing the assignments would notice a track that was only running once become very popular for that week and change it to run twice to benefit campers but it would have been unreasonable to ask the staffers to check multiple combinations of available track times and see which one had the best ‘final outcome’ at the end of the sort.

- Because of time constraints and the fact that some of the process involves guesswork regarding track popularity, there was no way of making sure that each camper had the best possible assignment combination (after all, the master grid had to be completed prior to the end of opening night).
