Video comes in a lot of packages. DVD and Blu-ray, streaming video from Netflix or Hulu, Youtube clips and movies, and so on. JRiver Media Center integrates these into a single seamless interface.
JRiver's innovative Red October system completely eliminates the frustration factor from video. The download, installation, and configuration of DirectShow filters is fully automatic. You won't need to set up anything, and the configuration is separate from the normal DirectShow method Microsoft and other players use, so any changes there won't break MC's support.
JRiver Media Center supports TV tuners from Hauppage, ATI, Aver, and most other manufacturers. You can use the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) to watch live TV or to record or subscribe to your favorite programs.
Using Media Center's 10 foot interface, Theater View, you can watch from across the room on your TV and control it with a remote.
Media Center includes several software servers that can share your media between PC's. You can rip and organize on one machine, and play on many others. You can use MC's zones to serve media to several clients, even playing different media at the same time.
Media Center will work with thousands of TV's, Blu-ray players, receivers, and other devices which support the DLNA protocol. You can also use a PS3 or an Xbox 360.
Media Center can automatically convert audio and video streams for client playback when your connection isn't fast enough to play unconverted media.
Setup is simple. Just use Media Center on your server to generate a six character access key. Then enter that key on any client you want to use. A test mode can use JRiver's servers to test whether access from outside your network will work.
Media Center has a ten foot interface called Theater View. It's drawn with 3D graphics so it has a nice elastic feel. It's also configurable, so you can remove portions you don't use, or move things around to suit your taste. Background graphics give it additional appeal. Theater View is touch screen friendly.
Media Center supports the Windows Media Center remotes (the ones with the Green Button). JRiver offers one that we found to work well out of the box.
On Android, you can use Gizmo. It's included with Media Center, and can be downloaded from the Android market. It has a graphical interface so you can use the touch screen on a phone or tablet to select your choice for playback. Volume can be adjusted by using the hardware buttons on the Android device.
On iPhone, iPad, or other devices, you can use WebRemote, also part of Media Center. It's a browser interface. It gives you full control of Media Center from the couch or from any other place in the house.
Media Center can provide High Definition sound to the receiver when the right equipment is available. Usually this is done by streaming dts-HD or Dolby TrueHD to a receiver which decodes the sound and provides it to the 5.1 or x.1 speaker set. It can also be done by Media Center if the sound device on the HTPC supports surround sound speakers. Media Center can apply many adjustments for this purpose.
- Edit files with a right click. Crop, adjust, resize, and other common tools are available. Editing automatically stacks the originals and each saved version, so you can easily undo or start over. The original remains unchanged.
- E-mail files, or send to Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Menalto, or JRiver's pix01.com.
- Add files to playlists so that slideshows have a sound track.
- Zoom on files with the mouse scroll wheel or keyboard number pad (1 to 9).
- Adjust thumbnail sizes with a slider. Right click for many options.
- Stacks allow multiple images to be tied together as a set. This is useful for similar photos.
- Preview mode presents a large image with a filmstrip selection on the right, so you can easily compare two photos.
