What Makes Mozilla’s Firefox Attractive? by Gabriel Adams

If you’re much of a tech geek, you probably have at least heard of the “browser war” between Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox. For years, Microsoft Internet Explorer has had a near monopoly on the browser market. Sure, they had a little competition from Netscape, but not much. That has all changed with Firefox. Mozilla’s Firefox has put a large dent in the IE market share.

But why? What makes Firefox attractive? As a Firefox user, I think I can tell you. I can at least tell you what attracts me to Firefox.

Tabbed Browsing. This feature is a huge plus to me. As an Internet marketer, I can do some heavy duty web browsing. It’s a lot easier to have 25 tabs open that 25 windows.

Search Features. Firefox has that cool search bar in the upper right hand corner. With the click of a button, I can search using any one of many search engines. This is another feature that is very attractive to Internet marketers.

Extensions. add-ons are a lot easier to come by that IE add ons, probably because Firefox is completely open source. Sure, there are plenty of IE toolbars, but there are tons of Firefox tools, that can do all kinds of cool stuff.

Skins. I don’t really care too much about this feature, but you can customize your Firefox browser with a cool design - for free.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0

Security. Last but not least, Microsoft Internet Explorer has been exploited many, many times by various security threats. Mozilla’s Firefox is less susceptible to security breaches, so many people use Firefox to stay secure on the net.

These are just the major benefits that Firefox offers. Interestingly enough, Microsoft is trying to add many of these features to their IE 7. If the sincerest form of flattery is imitation, Microsoft itself admits that Firefox is great!

You are still paying for AntiVirus Software?!? by David Mackey

If there is one thing that every computer user has had drilled into their head its, “You need to be protected against viruses.” Even individuals who don’t know much about computers know this, and live in fear of the viruses that can invade their system.

Sadly, this knowledge that they need protection does not oftentimes equate into adequate protection. Many of the major computer manufacturers (e.g. Dell) include trial subscriptions of mainline antivirus software such as Symantec or McAfee. Sadly, most people do not realize that these software quickly expire and become outdated and inefficient without constant virus definition updates (that tell them what to look for in viruses). This may include you.

In any case, there are two important things to be noted. First, is that those mainstream antivirus programs fail to provide the level of protection you would like and rank much lower than many lesser-known but more capable antivirus programs. For a good summary of antivirus programs you can visit this blog by CyberNetNews.

The second item which should be noted is that one no longer needs to pay for antivirus software. There are plenty of free antivirus programs available for any needs you may have. For the individual who is using their computer only for personal use there are numerous options such as Grisoft’s AVG Anti Virus or Avast! Antivirus. Available for both personal and business use is ClamWin and ActiveVirusShield.

ClamWin is an open source project, thus offering flexibility in licensing as well as development. I’ve installed it on my churches’ computers and have thus far found it to be a capable program. ActiveVirusShield on the other hand is released through a partnership between AOL and Kaspersky. Kaspersky has written one of the best commercial antivirus programs available and it is this engine that underlies the ActiveVirusShield.

According to ClamWin’s detection rate info., its detection rate is somewhat low. So if I were you, I would go with ActiveVirus Shield. But any way you go you are going to find comparable antivirus protection to Symantec and McAfee at a much better price (free).Avast! Home EditionAVG Free Edition

To Flock or not to Flock

Yet another web browser has seen the light of day. Flock, is based on Mozilla and has some new and interesting features:
Flock has support for publishing to WordPress, Movable Type, Typepad, and Blogger blogs using the built-in blog editor.
Set Up My BlogBlog Post
Another option is “Star this page” and the page will be added to your del.icio.us bookmarks. By default, you need to check “Share this favorite” to add your bookmark and tags on del.icio.us.
In addition, you can browse your del.icio.us bookmarks in Flock’s Favorites without having to visit your del.icio.us page.
Flock also allows you to sort through bookmarks by their tags.

Star this pageSet as bookmark on del.icio.us

I’ve been using it for a couple of hours now and it looks hopeful. Flock definitely worth a try.
